My parents, my mother especially, were your typical dubs in this regard. They attribute anything they can't understand to demons. They have no imagination because this part of their brain is removed at an early age. We had a talk at a circuit assembly once by the district overseer who said people shouldn't watch the "Star Wars" movies because the "dark side of the force" represented demonism. He had to make it known repeatedly "of course I've never watched these movies".

Addams Family and other TV Shows
by jws ini recently picked up a copy of the original addams family tv show on dvd because i loved the movies, but never saw the original tv shows because my parents would not let me for jw reasons (presumably for demonism, witchcraft, etc.).
i'm about 12 episodes in and i don't know why this was banned.
ok, there's thing (a hand/arm), and a bear skin rug that growls.

JWs and Love towards their families
by R.F. inthis is something that just popped in my mind suddenly.. but i was thinking about over the years the many comments of jws about loved ones.
for instance, one sister was speaking of her disgust with her children not accepting the "truth".
she gladly tells anyone of what she told them; that if they don't accept it before armageddon that it's too bad.

We were always taught that the thing that set us apart the most from the world was the love that we had. How strong was it really when even parents can disown their children for not believing as they do anymore. Do Catholics or people of other faiths whom dubs are so quick to judge for their lack of love treat their members this way? This "love" they allegedly have is a fraud and a sham.

Since we're on the topics of the Assemblies...
by forsharry inquestion.
i'm not sure if this has ever been brought up before (probably has) but something just occurred to me...why were there always dubs guarding the donation boxes outside out of the conventions (in the hallways.)?
i mean i know the obvious reason behind it...very north korea-esque if you ask me, but we were told over and over just how special and christian and different we were from the world.... i'm looking for your theories on this.

It's to give the witnesses with no job skill(of which there are numerous) something to do when they volunteer so that they feel as if they're really contributing. It only takes so many to clean the bathrooms.

What didn't you do because you were a JW that you now regret?
by jwfacts ini just bought a bottle of wine for an exjw's 30th that i am about to run off to.
on it there was a great quote by mark twain:.
"twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do... explore.

I have more regrets than I care to recount. My entire childhood is one long regret. My biggest regret, though, is that it took me until I was in my 30's to see what a lie the organization was.

What is/was the last most believable date for second coming/Armageddon?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini was never a witness, i joined this site after my wife started studying with them, and i got upset over some of the things that resulted from that.
however, i grew up in a similar high-control group called the worldwide church of god.
much like the witnesses, in the mid 70s ( i forget the exact year, i was only in elementary school in those days, but it may have been 75, just like jws), there was a big push toward the end being at hand, the great tribulation is coming, etc etc.

2005 when the Red Sox won the world series. After the first one failed, how could any be taken seriously after that. Even William Miller learned to stop setting dates for Christ's return after 1844. He apparently was able to learn from his mistakes, which is the only thing Charles Russel didn't take from him.

Does anyone besides me still get one of the songs stuck in their head on occasion? I'll be at work and suddenly the song is just there. Am I alone? Is this an embarrasing secret I should've kept to myself?

How Would You Approach a JW "studying" in Public Transportation?
by GermanXJW ini get to the office by train.
recently, when i left the train at my destination station i noticed a jw, sitting there, obviously "studying" the "revelation"-book for the night's cbs.
it was too late for my, but i was thinking about saying something like "don't you get it at the third time that this is bullshit?

If you really feel the need to converse with them, you could ask them which version they're reading, the original or the revised one with the 70 plus changes in it.

The best thing to do is ignore them. They do it in public because they want strangers to approach them. It's a way of informal witnessing. Don't you remember all those painful experiences at the assemblies about bible studies being started this way?

Intelligence of Witness Material
by choosing life inwhen i started attending the meetings, i was in college.
i would use any excuse i could to get out of the watchtower study.
i couldn't believe they wanted me to read the article at home and underline the answers and then i had to sit and listen to them read it aloud again and give the same exact answers they underlined in the magazine.

How I long for the days of studying My Book of Bible Stories and Listening to the Great Teacher. What an intellectual paradise.
